about

Hot on the heels of that dope Detroit double header here at THEMA, we were feeling that deep thing, and here we are back again but this time with a plate full of tracks from a new duo under the guise, Suburb. It’s a tough thing in the current climate of the industry to make the decision to debut a new artist on vinyl with no guarantees of returns, but sometimes we hear something that just has to drop and then we’re forced to make the call. We know you’ll recognize that Smallpeople remix , but you’ve got to understand that these things exist for a reason, and the reason they took this on is because this duo from Hamburg exudes pure quality. Both of them have been DJing and making music for quite some time, and it was only after they got the approval of Sven Vath’s Cocoon Club in Frankfurt that they decided they were ready for the big time. We’re committed in delivering quality abstract non comformative grooves, so we present three killer tracks from these two talented individuals on wax along with a sexy remix from our two friends at Smallville.

We get underway with “Motor” here, an 8-minute excursion that revs its engines and takes the gents claim that they’re trying to set themselves apart very seriously. There’s some of that deep Hamburg sound here, but the layers of subtle percussion, the slowly building acidic bass, and the tough kick drum all add up to something with a bit more throttle on
the pedal, and about halfway in that acid line gets plain nasty and encourages curious DJs to take this on a test drive. “Pade” is a 3-minute showcase for the duo’s production chops, and the sounds that they wring out of their synthesizers here are psychedelic to say the least and a nice counterpoint to the nature sounds they pair them with. We don’t need to introduce the gents who took on the remix of “33 rpm” that leads the B-side, but we do think you’ll be pleased with their subtly slamming revision and the gently propulsive melodies and drums that lead this one so surely into the DJ’s next pick. Last up is the original version of “33 rpm.” You’ll recognize those echoing drums from the first number, but they make a deeply engineered combination of the two tracks on the first side here for what we think is the sexiest groove on the entire release. The descending synths in the second half are sure to sweep some people off of their feet... For the digital release we have also included a “Dub” version of this sexy number just to keep it interesting.

So we close our second dirty dozen over at Thema with one of our classiest offerings yet, and debut or not it wouldn’t get our seal if we didn’t believe so strongly in Suburb. Keep a look out for these guys as they will be making some serious noise on Thema and other well regarded labels.
