After releasing some cross-eyed dance floor burners on District of Corruption, Little Helpers and Bar25, Pablo Roman Alcalá aka Beaner brought some seriously sexy bent grooves over to Brooklyn for those ever lasting late night benders. His first EP for Thema was a dark and tangled ode to the drug-addled prose of author, Denis Johnson, which was well received by a slew of various deranged DJ’s. This time he returns to stake his place on the dance floor with four deep, fractured after-hours jams. The name “Mixed Doubles” is apt, as you’ll find the pairings of unlikely elements on these tracks aligning nicely... before they are slowly pried apart. Of course, that’s when things truly get interesting.

“niko & bart” opens the EP with a sharp hi hat and nasty rolling bass line that swerves through plucked guitar, droning organs, saxophone, sultry chanting—with all elements stood on edge, meeting in an unpredictable cinematic fashion. Short interlude “mers & vanus” gurgles through it’s scant running time with a laid-back off kilter drum roll filtered over some back-masking weirdness.

“michelle & fuckhead” sets up the B side with some glitchy transistor radio action and that familiar rubbery dub-ish bass line. A twangy hypnotic couplet pans across the stereo field as long peals of pure sine waves slink into view, slowly transforming a bouncy club track into a reflective soundscape. Closer, “you & i” rolls out a mid tempo disco burner complete with tambourine, breathy female voice and even a whistle. A deep bass line bubbles below the surface pushing out only gasps of feedback while a simple little piano refrain hold the whole thing together from open to close.

As an epilogue, we’ve included a nasty little digital bonus.“brenda’s nut farm” is a sexy little night drive track to warm up shadowy dance floors with breathy vocals and a dark cavernous atmosphere.
