[THEMA044] The Village

by Myles Sergé

  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

At Thema we have always been drawn towards producers with a strong artistic identity, carving out their own unique niche away from the crowds of soundalike track factories. Myles Sergé is one man who more than meets that requirement, having constantly issued forth surprise after surprise in a catalogue that reaches back to 2002. It is however in the last five years that Sergé has really hit his stride, working closely with labels such as SIXONESIX and Knotweed as well as running his own RE(FORM) and (MS) labels. If there were one quality that marks out his distinctive sound it would be rhythm, and his keen instinct for how to contort and mutate it without losing that crucial dancefloor attraction.

Having already had a strong year with releases on Caduceus and (MS), we’re thrilled to present this sturdy body of work that truly shows off the range Sergé has in him as an artist. There are some audacious moments of suspense and release; just look to opening track “Clockwerks” and observe how he can tease your expectations with a beguiling intro that could be a standalone piece of music in its own right. Amongst the head-snagging interplay of abstract percussive elements there is always a functional core that keeps the energy level peaking, speaking an advanced techno language that travels way beyond the limitations of convention and tradition. Sergé might himself call it “Forgotten Folklore”, but really it just hasn’t been thought of yet.
